Employer-plan rollovers
401(k) to Gold IRA: Rollover Rules & Steps (2026)
A 401(k) can fund a gold IRA only through an eligible distribution and a valid rollover into a compatible IRA. Plan access, the payee instructions and the traditional or Roth destination matter before bullion is purchased.
Can your current or former 401(k) release the money?
A former employer’s plan may allow a distribution after employment ends, subject to its terms. While still employed, access depends on the plan and an applicable permitted distribution event. The IRS describes age 59½ IRS · as of 2026-11-04 as a possible event for certain distributions, but reaching that age does not require every plan to offer an in-service rollover. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
Ask the administrator for the summary plan description, distribution options and the tax character of the eligible amount. A dealer cannot establish eligibility for your employer’s plan. A brokerage window also does not necessarily permit physical bullion or authorize a distribution from the plan.
This guide addresses the 2026 funding process, rather than publishing a special gold rollover allowance. The gold retirement account guide explains the receiving account and custody arrangement. Confirm access before opening an account around a dealer’s assumptions.
Which amounts can and cannot be rolled over?
The IRS excludes required minimum distributions, hardship distributions and certain other payments from eligible rollover treatment. A plan’s willingness to distribute cash is therefore not proof that the cash can be rolled over. Ask whether the proposed payment is an eligible rollover distribution. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
Identify pretax money, designated Roth money and any other after-tax amounts separately. Employer contributions and employee Roth deferrals can have different tax character. The plan statement and administrator’s records should support the allocation; do not classify the entire balance by the account’s most prominent label.
An eligible plan-to-IRA rollover is separate from an ordinary annual IRA contribution. A large rollover does not use the annual contribution allowance merely because the receiving IRA will buy metal. It also does not remove the receiving custodian’s product and storage requirements.
Loan balances and unusual distribution categories need specific review. Do not assume every amount visible on the plan portal will arrive as freely investable cash in the IRA.
How does a direct rollover work?
For a direct rollover, the plan pays the eligible amount to the receiving IRA rather than to you personally. The IRS says a plan may issue a check payable to the new account, and no tax is withheld from the direct rollover amount. Follow the administrator’s and receiving custodian’s exact payee instructions. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
Physical possession of a check is not the deciding factor. A check made payable to the receiving custodian for your benefit can be part of the direct route. A check made payable to you introduces different requirements even if a representative calls both payments “rollovers.”
Confirm the legal custodian name, account title, account reference and delivery address through independently established contact details. Ask who confirms receipt and how the funds will be classified. Keep a copy of the authorization and check or payment advice.
A direct rollover can simplify withholding and redeposit concerns, but it does not erase the tax consequences of directing pretax money into a Roth IRA. Account matching remains a separate decision.
What changes when the payment is made to you?
An eligible rollover distribution from an employer plan paid to you generally has mandatory 20% federal withholding on an indirect employer-plan rollover distribution IRS · as of 2026-11-04. The usual redeposit deadline is 60 days from receipt for an indirect rollover IRS · as of 2026-11-04. To roll over the full gross amount, you generally need other funds to replace the withheld portion.
Withholding is not the final tax calculation. If only the net payment is redeposited, the portion not rolled over generally remains a distribution under the applicable rules. Recovery or credit of withholding occurs through tax reporting, rather than automatically becoming part of the IRA deposit.
Do not rely on a dealer purchase deadline or a promise of a quick account opening to satisfy the statutory timing rule. The receiving IRA needs to accept the correct rollover amount within the applicable requirements. Keep evidence of when you received the payment and when the custodian accepted it.
The IRS discusses limited relief for certain missed deadlines. Relief is not automatic permission to ignore the deadline or assume any failed rollover can be repaired. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
How should traditional and Roth plan money be matched?
| Plan source | Potential IRA destination | Key tax question |
|---|---|---|
| Pretax plan assets | Traditional IRA | A valid compatible rollover generally preserves tax deferral. |
| Pretax plan assets | Roth IRA | Previously untaxed amounts generally create conversion income. |
| Designated Roth plan assets | Roth IRA | Follow the designated Roth rollover and recordkeeping rules. |
| Other after-tax plan amounts | Depends on allocation and destination | Obtain the administrator’s breakdown and qualified tax review. |
The IRS explains that designated Roth plan money can be rolled into a Roth IRA, subject to its rules. Time in a designated Roth plan account does not count toward the Roth IRA’s 5-year Roth IRA qualification period IRS · as of 2026-11-04; an earlier Roth IRA contribution history can matter. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
A Roth 401(k) and a Roth IRA therefore should not be treated as having an automatically identical withdrawal history. Keep the plan’s contribution and earnings records. Our Roth gold IRA rules guide separates qualification periods from conversion considerations.
What are the practical rollover steps?
- Confirm plan eligibility. Obtain the distribution options and identify which amounts qualify for rollover. Resolve any required distribution separately.
- Select the receiving IRA. Confirm traditional or Roth registration, accepted bullion, the custody arrangement and all written schedules before funding.
- Get the receiving instructions. Verify the legal payee, account reference and delivery method with both institutions through independently confirmed contacts.
- Authorize the funding route. Request the direct rollover or understand the withholding and deadline obligations of a payment made to you.
- Confirm receipt and classification. Match the amount and tax character to the funding instruction before approving a metal order.
- Authorize eligible bullion separately. Review exact products, purchase pricing, a current resale bid and the depository receipt after execution.
An IRA application, rollover authorization and metal order are separate approvals. Ask whether signing a document also authorizes purchases or gives ongoing trading authority. Keep decisions reviewable until you understand the terms.
There is no verified universal completion time in our source record. Existing-plan processing, identity checks, payment delivery and product availability can all affect the sequence. The gold IRA rollover steps guide covers the broader distinction between employer-plan rollovers and IRA transfers.
Which records and tax forms should you check afterward?
The distributing plan generally reports the payment on Form 1099-R, while the receiving IRA reports qualifying rollover information on Form 5498. Reportability does not by itself mean a direct rollover is currently taxable. Reconcile the gross amount, withholding, tax character and receiving-account record. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
Then reconcile the bullion order with the funded IRA, the depository receipt and the custodian statement. A correct rollover can still be followed by an expensive product purchase or an inappropriate storage instruction. The funding confirmation does not establish that every subsequent investment choice is sound.
If records disagree, ask the responsible institution about correction before assuming the transaction needs to be repeated. Repeating a payment without understanding the original can make classification harder. Retain the plan statement and Roth history after the old portal closes.
Review gold IRA taxes for cash and in-kind distribution reporting later in the account’s life.
What tradeoffs should you consider before leaving the plan?
Compare the existing plan’s investment menu, written costs and services with the proposed IRA’s purchase pricing, administration and storage obligations. A rollover provides another account arrangement; it does not guarantee that the new investment or service is better. You may also have choices that involve keeping some assets in the plan.
A self-directed physical account offers investment control over accepted bullion but adds dealer selection, custody documentation and distribution logistics. The plan may provide services or investment terms that matter to you. Consider the whole arrangement instead of treating access to gold as the only relevant feature.
Ask what changes for beneficiaries, loans, withdrawal exceptions and account protections in your circumstances, and obtain qualified guidance where needed. A kit request does not authorize a rollover. Written plan eligibility and receiving-account instructions should come before a binding metal order or any release of retirement assets.
What else should you know?
Can I roll over a 401(k) while still employed?
Only if the plan permits an applicable distribution. Ask the administrator which in-service options exist and whether the proposed payment is eligible for rollover. A dealer cannot establish plan access.
Does a direct rollover require the check to bypass me physically?
The payee instructions matter. A plan check payable to the receiving IRA custodian for your benefit can be part of a direct rollover even if you forward the check.
Is withholding on an indirect rollover the final tax bill?
No. Withholding is a payment toward tax. The amount ultimately taxable depends on the valid rollover, account character and other circumstances reported on your return.
Can a Roth 401(k) go into a Roth gold IRA?
An eligible designated Roth distribution can be rolled into a supporting Roth IRA under the applicable rules. Confirm account matching and preserve the contribution and earnings history.
Can a required minimum distribution be rolled over?
No. The required distribution is not eligible for rollover. Resolve that obligation separately with the plan administrator before rolling eligible remaining funds.
