Home Storage Gold IRA Rules: What the IRS Requires
You cannot personally store IRA bullion at home: the IRS requires qualifying bullion to remain in the physical possession of a bank or approved nonbank trustee.
What does the IRS say about keeping gold at home?
The IRS directly addresses home storage in its IRA investment FAQ. It says the exception for qualifying bullion requires physical possession by a bank or IRS-approved nonbank trustee, including bullion bought indirectly through an IRA-owned LLC. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
A personal safe does not meet that requirement. Describing an arrangement as “checkbook control” does not remove the custody condition. Do not confuse owning metal personally with holding metal as an asset of a retirement account.
Does a self-directed IRA change the custody rule?
Self-directed describes investment choice within the account. It does not give the owner permission to ignore IRA asset restrictions or personally possess IRA bullion. The qualified custodian and the storage arrangement remain central to the structure.
The IRS describes the permitted coin and bullion exceptions under IRC 408(m). The product’s eligibility and its possession are separate checks. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
Is a home-safe advertisement a sufficient legal explanation?
No. Ask for the precise legal basis and independent professional advice before relying on such a proposal. An LLC formation package, a dealer’s assurance or an account application does not itself establish compliance. A storage claim should be checked against the IRS’s direct answer.
Taking possession can create distribution consequences. Do not attempt to fix an existing arrangement by relabeling personal custody after the fact. Gather the agreements and transaction records, then seek qualified tax advice about the actual facts.
What should the storage documents explain?
- The legal custodian or trustee and the named storage facility.
- Whether holdings are segregated or held in a shared allocation arrangement.
- How holdings are identified on statements.
- Insurance scope, exclusions and the process for a loss claim.
- How the custodian authorizes a sale, transfer or distribution.
“Approved depository” is not a promise of investment results or an IRS endorsement of a salesperson. Ask the custodian to confirm that the proposed facility and arrangement meet its requirements.
How is personal gold different?
Gold purchased with personal funds for personal delivery is held outside the IRA. Its storage and future tax treatment require a separate assessment. Moving IRA gold to personal possession is not an ordinary way to change depositories; it can be a reportable distribution.
Read the metals eligibility guide and the distribution guide before treating physical delivery as a routine account option.
What else should you know?
Does an IRA-owned LLC allow me to keep the bullion?
No. The IRS states that the physical-possession condition also applies to an indirect acquisition through an IRA-owned LLC.
Can I request a physical distribution later?
Ask the custodian about an in-kind distribution. Receiving the metal personally is different from leaving it in IRA custody and may have tax consequences.
