Custody & storage
Gold IRA Storage: Segregated vs Commingled Rules
Gold IRA storage must support the IRA’s qualified custody arrangement. Segregated and commingled describe how holdings are kept and recorded; neither label replaces product eligibility, ownership records or insurance terms.
What does a depository do for a gold IRA?
A depository stores bullion within the arrangement established by the IRA custodian or trustee. The dealer sells the products; the custodian administers the IRA; the storage facility handles physical custody under its agreements. Identify which legal entity performs each function before approving an order.
For qualifying IRA bullion, the IRS requires physical possession by a bank or an approved nonbank trustee. A dealer’s phrase “approved depository” does not constitute an IRS endorsement of the dealer, its pricing or the investment. Ask the custodian how the proposed facility fits its compliant custody arrangement. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
Storage solves an operational requirement, not investment risk. The metal can lose value while remaining properly stored. Our gold retirement account guide explains why the account, the investment and the custody service need separate review.
How do segregated and commingled storage differ?
| Arrangement | Usual description | Contract question |
|---|---|---|
| Segregated | Identified account holdings are stored separately under the agreement | Will a release return the specific identified items, and how are they recorded? |
| Commingled or non-segregated | Metal is stored alongside other customers’ holdings, with ownership maintained in records | Does release mean the original items or equivalent eligible products? |
| Either arrangement | The custodian and storage records should support the account’s rights | Who reconciles holdings, authorizes movements and addresses discrepancies? |
These are practical descriptions, not a universal legal definition imposed on every storage provider. Read the agreement’s own use of allocated, pooled, segregated and non-segregated. Ask whether segregation occurs by customer, account, product category or another method. A short sales summary can leave those distinctions unanswered.
Segregation may suit someone who wants specific identified property preserved under the agreement, but it can have a different price and availability. Commingled storage may involve a different release entitlement. Neither arrangement is automatically uninsured, improper or suitable solely because of its name.
Which storage fees are documented in the source data?
| Custodian example used in the Goldco record | Published annual storage charge | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Non-segregated storage | $110Custodian Equity Trust’s published storage schedule; not a dealer quoteEquity Trust fee FAQ · as of 2026-10-29 | Equity Trust schedule in the supplied company record. |
| Segregated storage | $160Custodian Equity Trust’s published storage schedule; not a dealer quoteEquity Trust fee FAQ · as of 2026-10-29 | Equity Trust schedule in the supplied company record. |
These are the custodian’s published schedule examples within the Goldco source record. They are not a complete Goldco dealer quote or a universal depository price. The record gives precedence to the Equity Trust schedule over older dealer storage amounts. Another custodian or arrangement can have different terms.
Ask for the schedule attached to your own account and which services it includes. Confirm billing timing, whether insurance is included and whether movement, delivery or special handling creates additional charges. No unverified account total or promotional discount is assumed here. The gold IRA fees guide separates storage from administration, metal pricing and resale costs.
What insurance documents should you request?
FINRA warns that precious-metals arrangements can include storage and insurance charges even where the underlying metal is missing. An invoice marked “insured” is therefore insufficient evidence of either the holdings or the relevant coverage. Verify both independently through the responsible organizations. finra.org · as of 2026-11-04
- A current evidence-of-coverage document or policy summary identifying the insured entity and covered location.
- An explanation of covered events, exclusions, valuation terms, deductibles and any limits affecting account holdings.
- The claims procedure, including who submits the claim and how the IRA’s ownership would be documented.
- Confirmation of whether transit is covered separately from metal already held at the facility.
Ask what documentation can be shared with account holders and request written explanations where full policy documents are unavailable. Facility-wide coverage does not automatically describe the payment to your account after a particular loss. Insurance also does not reimburse ordinary changes in the market value of gold. Do not treat an insurer’s name as a guarantee of the dealer’s business conduct.
How can you verify ownership and inventory?
Trace the purchase from the funded IRA to the order confirmation, the facility’s receipt or allocation record and the custodian’s account statement. Product descriptions, quantities and account references should agree. Ask which record is authoritative if the dealer portal and custodian statement differ.
For identified bars or other specifically recorded property, ask what identifiers appear and who maintains them. For a commingled arrangement, ask how the entitlement is measured and what equivalent products may be returned. The goal is to understand an enforceable ownership and release process, rather than merely recognize a vault’s brand.
Self-directed IRA custodians generally do not assess the investment’s merits or verify every statement made by a promoter. Confirm what the custodian actually checks, what the depository confirms and which tasks remain yours. SEC Investor.gov · as of 2026-11-04
Also ask about independent inventory reviews and how discrepancies are escalated. Obtain a description of the review’s scope; a general assurance that a facility is audited does not tell you which account records were reconciled or what exceptions were found.
Why does home storage fail the bullion custody rule?
The IRS says qualifying bullion must be in the physical possession of a bank or IRS-approved nonbank trustee. It explicitly applies that rule to an indirect purchase through an IRA-owned limited liability company. Creating an LLC therefore does not authorize keeping IRA bullion in your home. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
A personal safe, private access arrangement or personally rented box is not a substitute for the required trustee possession. Do not confuse ownership of the IRA with permission to take its bullion for personal use. A legitimate in-kind distribution can result in personal delivery, but that is an account withdrawal requiring its own valuation and tax treatment.
The practical appeal of seeing or handling your metal does not resolve the legal custody question. Before following a home-storage proposal, get qualified tax review of the actual arrangement. Read home storage gold IRA rules for the distinction between IRA custody and personally owned bullion.
What happens when metal moves or leaves storage?
A change of depository should be coordinated through the custodian. Ask who authorizes release, who arranges shipment, which account records change and how receipt is confirmed. Keeping the shipment inside the custody arrangement is different from sending property to the IRA owner.
Personal delivery may be an in-kind distribution. IRS reporting uses the fair market value of distributed property, so moving the metal to your home can have tax consequences even when no sale occurs. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
For an IRA sale, ask whether the dealer can bid while the bullion remains at the facility or needs physical delivery before final settlement. Establish when ownership and shipment risk change and which charges apply. The gold IRA taxes guide covers distribution reporting.
A storage contract should explain the exit as clearly as the entry. Confirm procedures for changing custodians, addressing a facility closure, resolving an inventory disagreement and obtaining records after leaving. Avoid authorizing a release based solely on a phone explanation.
How should you choose between the arrangements?
Compare the exact property rights, annual schedule, insurance evidence and release process offered to your account. If you value retaining specific items, ask whether the segregated contract actually promises that result. If an equivalent-product entitlement is acceptable, understand its conditions before comparing prices.
Neither choice eliminates custody dependence. The account still relies on providers maintaining accurate records and following authorization procedures. Storage costs can also interact with the product selection: an unusual item may be harder to value or resell even when held separately.
Save the signed agreement, storage election, current schedule and holdings evidence together. Recheck them when changing products or providers. A useful storage decision is supported by documents that answer who holds what, for which account, under which rights, at what stated charge and with what exit process. That is more informative than a general claim about vault security.
What else should you know?
Does segregated storage automatically mean safer storage?
No universal safety conclusion follows from the label. Review ownership rights, inventory controls, insurance terms and the release process in the actual agreement.
Will commingled storage return my original coins?
The agreement determines whether you receive specific original items or equivalent eligible products. Ask the custodian to explain the entitlement in writing.
Are the storage prices an all-in Goldco quote?
No. They are Equity Trust schedule examples recorded in the supplied company data. Dealer pricing, administration and transaction charges require a separate written quote.
Can an IRA-owned LLC keep gold at my home?
The IRS applies the qualifying bullion possession requirement to indirect acquisitions through an IRA-owned LLC. An LLC does not remove that requirement.
Does insurance cover a fall in gold prices?
Storage insurance addresses specified covered losses under its terms. It does not eliminate ordinary market risk or establish that your purchase price will be recovered.
