Gold IRA Rollover Steps: Transfer, Direct & Indirect Routes
A gold IRA rollover should begin with distribution eligibility and a documented receiving account, followed by the correct direct or indirect funding route and confirmation of receipt.
Which route applies to your existing account?
| Existing source | Route to confirm | Key record |
|---|---|---|
| Another IRA | Trustee-to-trustee transfer, where appropriate | Transfer request and receiving-custodian confirmation. |
| Employer plan | Direct rollover of an eligible distribution | Administrator instructions and payment record. |
| Payment already made to you | Indirect rollover, if eligible | Receipt date, gross amount, withholding and redeposit confirmation. |
What are the steps before funds move?
- Ask the current institution whether the specific assets and distribution are eligible.
- Confirm traditional or Roth treatment with the receiving custodian.
- Resolve any current required minimum distribution separately.
- Open the receiving account and obtain its exact payment instructions.
- Submit the appropriate transfer or rollover authorization.
- Keep the funding record and confirm receipt before ordering metal.
An account application does not prove that the existing plan permits a distribution. A dealer’s estimate does not change the current institution’s rules. If account types differ, ask for qualified tax advice before submitting instructions.
What if the payment is made to you?
The usual rollover deadline is 60 days from receipt IRS · as of 2026-11-04. An eligible employer-plan distribution paid to you generally has 20% mandatory withholding IRS · as of 2026-11-04. Replacing the withheld amount can be necessary to roll over the entire gross amount.
Indirect IRA-to-IRA rollovers generally face a one-per-12-month-period limit across your IRAs IRS · as of 2026-11-04. Trustee-to-trustee transfers and direct employer-plan rollovers are excluded from that frequency restriction. Keep these rules separate from the annual contribution allowance.
If the payment has already arrived, preserve the receipt date and ask about eligibility immediately. Possible IRS relief for a missed deadline is not automatic permission to ignore the deadline.
What cannot be treated as an ordinary rollover?
Required minimum distributions and certain other distributions are ineligible. A Roth conversion may create taxable income even when the funds move between institutions. Read the actual transaction description rather than accepting a general “tax free rollover” label. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
What should you check after funding?
Confirm the gross amount transferred or distributed, any amount withheld, the amount accepted by the receiving IRA and the transaction’s classification. Retain statements from both providers and the tax forms supplied afterward. Raise a mismatch promptly rather than assuming the dealer will correct it.
Then use the opening checklist for product approval and storage confirmation. The tax funding route and the bullion purchase are distinct steps.
What else should you know?
Does a direct transfer use my annual contribution allowance?
A qualifying trustee transfer is separate from ordinary annual contributions. The receiving custodian should classify the movement correctly.
Can an RMD be rolled over?
No. Required minimum distributions are not eligible rollover amounts. Ask about the required distribution before moving the remaining funds.
