Gold IRA RMDs: Cash, Metal & Distribution Planning
A traditional IRA holding gold still has required minimum distribution obligations, which may be handled through cash or an in-kind distribution under the custodian’s procedures.
When do required distributions begin?
Current IRS guidance generally identifies age 73 IRS · as of 2026-11-04 for the start of traditional IRA RMDs; the applicable rule depends on the owner’s circumstances and birth year. Roth IRA owners have no lifetime RMDs. Inherited accounts need separate analysis.
Do not assume that a dealer’s general explanation resolves your starting date. Ask the custodian to identify the account type, owner or beneficiary status and applicable deadline. A physical-metal investment does not create an exception.
How can an account holding metal provide a distribution?
| Route | Administrative task | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Cash distribution | Sell sufficient holdings or use available account cash. | What is the bid, settlement process and processing charge? |
| In-kind distribution | Release metal to the recipient as a distribution. | How is fair market value determined, reported and delivered? |
| Permitted IRA aggregation | Discuss whether other eligible IRA distributions can satisfy the obligation. | Which account types may be aggregated in your circumstances? |
What makes metal harder to administer than cash?
Bullion units do not always match the exact required cash amount. A sale requires a bid, trade processing and available proceeds. Physical delivery requires authorization, valuation, insurance and delivery arrangements. Each step can add time and charges.
Ask for the custodian’s current process before the deadline approaches. Maintain a clear record of what was distributed and which date and value were reported. A depository shipment and a tax distribution must reconcile.
Can an RMD move to another IRA as a rollover?
No. Required minimum distributions are not eligible rollover amounts. Resolve the current distribution obligation separately before assuming the entire account can be rolled over. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
What should you ask each year?
- What deadline applies to this account and owner?
- How was the required amount calculated?
- Can available cash cover both the distribution and account fees?
- What would a sale or an in-kind delivery cost?
- What records will document completion and reporting?
This is a general administrative checklist, not a personal RMD calculation. Use the custodian and a qualified tax professional for account-specific decisions. See the fee guide for charges to request in writing.
What else should you know?
Does a Roth gold IRA require lifetime RMDs for its owner?
Roth IRA owners do not have lifetime required minimum distributions. Beneficiary rules are different.
Does receiving the metal avoid reporting the distribution?
No. An in-kind distribution needs proper valuation and reporting. Confirm the process with the custodian.
