IRA-Eligible Metals Rules: Product, Fineness & Custody
IRA-eligible metal must fit a statutory coin or bullion exception, meet the applicable fineness requirement and remain in a qualified custody arrangement.
Why are some gold products excluded?
IRC 408(m) treats metals and coins as collectibles unless a stated exception applies. The IRS identifies exceptions for specified coins and qualifying gold, silver, platinum and palladium bullion. A product marketed as valuable or collectible does not qualify merely because it contains precious metal. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
What does fineness mean?
Fineness is a measure of metal purity. For bullion, the statutory rule refers to the minimum fineness required for delivery under a regulated futures contract. Specific statutory coin exceptions need their own check; a blanket purity slogan is not a substitute for identifying the product correctly.
Ask for the mint or refiner, exact product name, stated fineness and weight. Have the custodian confirm acceptance before authorizing a purchase. The custodian may impose additional restrictions on what it will administer.
How should you check a proposed product?
| Check | Evidence to request | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Product identity | The exact coin or bar description on the order. | Broad labels can conceal a product substitution. |
| Eligibility basis | The applicable coin exception or bullion standard. | Gold content alone is insufficient. |
| Custodian acceptance | Written acceptance of the specific product. | A dealer label does not override the custodian’s policy. |
| Custody | Qualified trustee and depository instructions. | Personal possession is a separate compliance issue. |
Can you contribute metal you already own?
Do not assume personally owned bullion can simply be placed into the IRA as an annual contribution. Ask the custodian about the permitted form of contributions and transfers. Existing retirement assets and personal possessions involve different rules.
IRS · as of 2026-11-04 Keep product approval separate from the funding transaction, and use the opening checklist to document both.
Why does possession still matter for eligible bullion?
A qualifying product still needs qualified custody. The IRS says an IRA-owned LLC does not remove the physical-possession condition. IRS · as of 2026-11-04
Read home storage rules before accepting any proposal based on personal access to the metal. Product eligibility cannot cure an unacceptable storage arrangement.
What else should you know?
Does “IRA eligible” on a sales page settle eligibility?
No. Confirm the precise product and custody arrangement with the receiving custodian before ordering.
Are all gold coins acceptable?
No. The law provides specified coin and bullion exceptions. Collectible status, product identity and custody need separate checks.
