Gold IRA Fees: Compare Setup, Custody & Storage
Gold IRA costs include account setup, annual custody, storage and dealer purchase and resale pricing, so an advertised annual fee is not an all-in cost.
Which charges belong in a comparison?
| Cost | Who generally charges it? | What should you request? |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Custodian or account provider | The account-opening schedule and any separate wire charge. |
| Custody | IRA custodian | The recurring administration schedule and billing method. |
| Storage | Depository through the custody arrangement | Storage type, insurance terms and annual billing. |
| Metal pricing | Dealer | Exact product, purchase outlay and current same-product resale bid. |
| Exit or distribution | Dealer, custodian or storage provider as applicable | Sale, transfer, termination, shipping and in-kind release charges. |
What fees are documented in the source snapshot?
Custodian and depository examples are not all-in dealer quotes. Storage types differ. Missing verified values are marked “Written quote required.” See the scope notes below before comparing.
- Goldco: custody example uses Equity Trust. The custodian’s published non-segregated storage schedule, not a dealer quote, supersedes the older storage figures on Goldco’s cost page; segregated storage is $160Custodian Equity Trust’s published storage schedule; not a dealer quoteEquity Trust fee FAQ · as of 2026-10-29. Other custodians may differ.
- Augusta: the published storage example does not identify the storage type. Do not assume it is the same arrangement as another company’s quote.
- Birch: the fees are an Equity Trust and Delaware Depository example, not fees charged by Birch itself. Wire charges can be separate.
- Noble: the support FAQ and older IRA page use different setup presentations and storage prices. The table uses the support FAQ’s primary figures, labels the conflict, and requires confirmation. Noble says it offers segregated storage only.
- Patriot: conditional fee promotions and a storage-page setup statement do not establish an unconditional account price. Qualification thresholds and a general storage rate are not verified in our source snapshot. Patriot Gold Group · as of 2026-10-29
Why is a low annual fee insufficient?
The metal purchase and resale prices can matter more to your outcome than the recurring account charges. A dealer can quote a modest custody schedule while selling products with substantial premiums. Request an itemized order and a current buy bid for those exact products; do not compare a collectible-style coin quote against a generic bullion spot reference.
Spot price is a reference for the underlying metal, not an offer to buy your particular holdings. Retail products, dealer inventory, trading conditions and the product’s resale market can affect the bid. Ask whether quoted prices remain executable and for how long, without assuming any future price.
How should you assess a fee waiver?
Obtain the qualification conditions, the charges actually covered, how long the arrangement lasts and the standard price afterward. Ask whether the benefit depends on the initial purchase size, product mix, storage choice or remaining with a particular custodian.
Do not add an unverified promotional discount to the table. Patriot’s conditional offer illustrates why an advertised fee benefit cannot be treated as a general account price. Ask for the schedule that applies if your account does not qualify.
What should an all-in written quote contain?
- Exact product name, unit weight, fineness and quantity.
- Purchase price, all charges and a current resale bid for the same products.
- Custodian name, fee schedule and accepted-metals confirmation.
- Depository name, storage type and release or distribution procedure.
- Any promotional conditions and the standard charges after the offer.
Ask the custodian how cash will be kept available for recurring charges, and what happens if there is not enough available cash. Confirm whether shipping or account-closing charges arise during a later sale or transfer. Keep the provider’s reply with the signed agreement.
Compare company minimums separately from federal contribution limits. A company’s minimum does not change the tax rules.
What else should you know?
Are storage and custody the same fee?
No. Custody covers account administration; storage covers holding the metal. A provider may bill them together, so request the breakdown.
Are missing table values free?
No. They mean a reliable value within the required scope was not available for publication. Ask for a written quote.
Is a dealer spread a tax penalty?
No. Dealer pricing is part of the purchase and sale economics. Taxes and penalties arise under separate rules.
