What changes when retirement money leaves a workplace plan?

The investment menu, provider relationships, costs and administrative rules change. A plan may offer services, investment options or employer contributions that an individually opened IRA does not duplicate. Account protections and access rules also warrant a personal review before deciding to move money.

A dealer can help explain the receiving account without independently assessing your current plan. Request the existing plan’s documents and fee information, and compare them against the IRA agreements.

How do 2026 contribution limits differ?

The standard employee elective-deferral limit for a 401(k) in 2026 is $24,500 IRS · as of 2026-11-04. The ordinary combined traditional and Roth IRA limit is $7,500 IRS · as of 2026-11-04, or $8,600 at age 50 or older IRS · as of 2026-11-04, subject to compensation. Plan catch-up and other contribution rules are separate.

An eligible rollover of existing plan assets is not an ordinary annual IRA contribution. It does not create a new annual allowance for future savings. Ask the administrator how the distribution is reported and whether all amounts are eligible to move.

What should you ask before a rollover?

  • Are the assets available to leave the plan while you remain employed?
  • Would you lose access to any plan-specific services or options?
  • What are the plan’s ongoing costs compared with the proposed IRA?
  • Is the destination traditional or Roth, and could moving the money create taxable income?
  • Are any required distributions or other ineligible amounts included?

What else should you know?

Can every current employee roll a 401(k) into a gold IRA?

No. Distribution availability depends on the plan and your circumstances. Ask the plan administrator before opening a receiving account for that purpose.

Is physical gold automatically available in a workplace plan?

No. The investment menu is defined by the plan. A fund linked to gold is also different from direct ownership of bullion through a self-directed IRA.
