Gold IRA Minimums: Company Requirements vs IRS Limits
A gold IRA minimum is usually a company purchase requirement, while the IRS separately limits ordinary annual IRA contributions and permits qualifying rollover funding.

How are minimums different from contribution limits?
The ordinary combined IRA contribution limit for 2026 is $7,500 IRS · as of 2026-11-04, or $8,600 for people age 50 or older IRS · as of 2026-11-04, subject to taxable compensation. A dealer cannot raise that federal allowance merely by asking for a larger purchase.
Qualifying transfers and rollovers move existing retirement assets. They are not the same as making a new annual contribution. A company with a minimum above your contribution allowance may be expecting transfer or rollover funding, not permission to make an oversized annual deposit.
Can you combine funding sources?
Ask the receiving custodian about each source before sending money. Keep ordinary contributions, transfers and rollovers clearly identified in the records. Different account types and taxable basis can create additional reporting questions.
Do not assume a new IRA can accept personally owned gold as a rollover or contribution. Have the custodian confirm the permissible form of funding and the eligibility of any proposed asset movement. Use the funding checklist to keep the transaction route clear.
Is the lowest minimum the least expensive option?
No. Minimum size does not establish metal pricing, annual charges or resale liquidity. Fixed fees can consume a greater share of a smaller balance, while a larger order still needs scrutiny of its product premium. Compare written quotes with the same product and storage assumptions.
Read the fee ledger before treating account eligibility as a reason to buy. Waiting or choosing a different type of retirement account remains an option.
What else should you know?
Does the IRS require a dealer’s minimum?
No. A dealer minimum is a commercial term. Federal contribution and rollover rules are separate.
Why is Patriot’s minimum not shown?
